Over ten years ago, I published a series of print newsletters in an attempt to draw attention to the shenanigans and self-serving actions of certain elected officials in Downe Township. I called the newsletter "The DDT Newsletter" to represent what I was: A Disgruntled Downe Taxpayer. The idea for the DDT initials should be obvious to anyone living in or familiar with Downe Township. Along with holding the record for amount of tax exempt land in New Jersey we also hold the record for number of gnats, greenheads, strawberry flies, and mosquitoes per cubic foot of airspace within a New Jersey township. The assertion that we hold that record is unsubstantiated, as is the assertion that most residents believe it. My newsletters created what became known as the Downe Newsletter Wars which was a dueling battle of words and wit between Dave Burnight, a Newport resident, and myself. His newsletter was entitled "The Newporter" and expressed the views of many Newport residents in regard to Board of Education issues which were prevalent at the time. Another newsletter, "The Oldporter," created by Sharon Chance, had a very short life and minimal coverage but was a creative, witty and cutting parody of Dave and his unique perspective on township issues. I had the greatest respect for Dave and his wit, insight, intelligence and publishing perseverance. Unfortunately, Dave passed away a few years ago. In the next few days I intend to scan and publish my earlier print newsletters for reading enjoyment and Downe resident's entertainment as well as for my daughter Rebecca's history education about the years in Downe Township before she was born. I will make a link from the main DDT Online page to the print archieve page. Stay tuned.

The DDT Newsletter Online was originally published in a print addition of one or two pages and distributed by mail with a bulk mailing permit. The original DDT Newsletter was one man's attempt to change Downe Township's political atmosphere by informing the residents in a humorous way that our township could be administered better to everyone's benefit. This new Internet based version of the newsletter, is now DDT Newsletter Online. Downe Township is very special place to me. I have lived here for almost 40 years. My daughter is in the fourth grade in the Downe Township School District. I have every reason to continue to working toward making Downe an even better place to live. I believe a single voice can make a difference. I also believe that the Internet has given my single voice a strength and range of exposure that, before the Web, one voice has never had. "There is no week, nor day, nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves - and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance." Walt Whitman The DDT Newsletter Online continues that spirit of confidence and defiance. Comments to the DDT are welcome but must not be anonymous. Publication of email to the DDT is at the sole discretion of the publisher.
