The Devil's Tower could be located in Downe Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey. The intended tower location property is less than 1000 feet from the famous...and ecologically important...Bear Swamp West.
In addition to being less than 1000 feet from Bear Swamp the approved location is almost equidistant between the known Bald Eagle nests in Bear Swamp East and on the Nantuxant Creek near Money Island.
The Downe Planning and Zoning Board approved the tower placement on Sharp Lane in Newport at their June, 2001 meeting.
You can see the location of the intended site in relation to Bear Swamp.
What makes the Devil's Tower placement so ridiculous is the fact that Downe Township calls itself "Nature Lovers Paradise" and has the audacity to have a Bald Eagle painted on the side of the township rescue squad's ambulance.
Those of us knowledgeable of the situation in Downe recognize the sick irony that the rescue squad--that is, the organization driving the vehicle with the Eagle on the side--is the intended recipient of the lease money for the tower. Talk about selling one's self for a buck!
Either the Eagle is worth treating with respect or it is not. We either recognize that a cell tower in the middle of Eagle habitat... where the Eagle eats, breeds and raises its young...or we don't.
Either Downe Township is Nature Lovers Paradise...or it is not.
