Latest update: May 28, 2003
Just when I think I can ignore Downe Township for a few days I learn something new about Old One-term Dave. Since writing the material below I have discovered fascinating news. Those of you reading this who attended the Memorial Day activities at the Senior Center were presented with a boring question period used by Mr. Patterson to 'fill space' in the program. Earlier in the week, organizers helping Mr. Patterson realized there was some dead time in the program and a way was needed to entertain the people. Ruth McConnell asked Sarah Hartmann for some suggestions on how to entertain everyone until others could arrive. Sarah knew of Joe Ready's singing and playing talent from working with Joe in the Downe Jersey Chorus. Joe told me on Wednesday at The Dump that he was asked to play and that he took his instrument case into the Senior building thinking he was going to play there. Although Mr. Patterson knew Mr. Ready had been asked to perform, he chose to bore everyone with a poorly planned question period of long, boring questions about obscure dates and wars. My daughter told me, "Oh, Dad, it was so boring and he was so unprepared. And he didn't even know the answers to the questions he was asking." Mr. Ready was invited to play at the Senior Center. And he was ready! When Mr. Patterson realized he was going to be up-staged by Mr. Ready's clearly greater talent and greater crowd appeal, Mr. Patterson prevented Mr. Ready from performing by hogging the spot light with his boring and un-fun, stupid questions. Mr. Patterson was not pleased that Mr. Ready was given the opportunity to upstage him. After all...Mr. Patterson was the host! Although Mr. Ready had been invited to perform at the Senior Center... It wasn't until much later in the afternoon, at the Newport Fire Hall, that Mr. Ready was asked about his instrument case. Mr. Ready loves music and he loves singing. And he loves showing off his various instruments. In a few minutes Joe was entertaining folks with his strumming and singing. The whole crowd wanted to hear his singing so Mr. Ready moved into the larger portion of the Fire Hall. Joe's talent was clearly evident and he completely enthralled the crowd. People sang along with and...They loved him! A good time was had by all. Mr. Patterson was able to keep Mr. Ready from performing while at the Senior Center but he couldn't do so at the Fire Hall. Fortunately, someone asked what was in Mr. Ready's instrument case and he ended up entertaining everyone with a wonderful time. And he saved everyone from more politicking by Mr. Patterson. Davis Patterson owes Joe Ready a public apology for how he treated Joe at the Senior Center. And YOU need to vote for Chet Riland! May 26, 2003 The 2003-Downe-Township-Memorial-Day- Elect-Davis-Patterson-Parade Old One-Term Patterson showed his true colors on Memorial Day. Thanks to the usual half-baked planning of Mr. Patterson the day was almost a totally boring and chaotic loss. If it were not for the wonderful and talented singing of the Downe Jersey Chorus, directed by are own Sarah Hartmann, and the fantastic upbeat singing and finger picking by Joe Ready the day would have been a typical Dave-Disaster. Thanks to Mr. Patterson's poor planning and incompetent hosting of the event people were ready to leave almost before the events of the day started. Because Mr. Patterson is so inept at motivating people he usually needs a committee to accomplish anything. Apparently there was no official Memorial-Day-Parade- to-Elect-Dave-Patterson Committee. Minutes before the parade was to start, Mr. Patterson was heard soliciting help from attendees at the event to help him end the confusion that he had created. Old One-Term was clearly over his head and out of his element. Not only was he unable to get the fire engines to parade on time he clearly alienated many people with the incessant marketing of his brand of religion. It's OK to be a Christian and a believer, Dave, but our Constitution and our country is all about separation of church and state. Keep your religion out of our local politics! True and patriotic Americans understand that we are a country diverse in religious perspective. That fact seems to escape One-term because he is so clouded in his thinking by his particularly brand of Christianity. I did not serve as a paratrooper in the 82d Airborne Division during Viet Nam so only Dave- Patterson-style Christianity could be expressed back home. I served proudly with America's Guard of Honor so that all people of all faiths could band together in patriotic union in celebration of what it is to be an American. I did not train to jump out of airplanes into the dark of night so people like Dave Patterson can thrust their own personal brand of enlightenment on me and my neighbors. It's cool that you are a Christian, Davis. But the singing of all the hymns--particularly Onward Christian Soldiers-- was a bit overboard and out of place. Often, when I see Mr. Patterson climbing onto his high religious horse I recall a paraphrasing from Shakespeare: "The gentleman doth protest to much, me thinks." Let's get rid of Davis Patterson. Vote for Chet Riland on June 3, 2003. I'll have more. Check back here soon...

The DDT Newsletter Online was originally published in a print addition of one or two pages and distributed by mail with a bulk mailing permit. The original DDT Newsletter was one man's attempt to change Downe Township's political atmosphere by informing the residents in a humorous way that our township could be administered better to everyone's benefit. This new Internet based version of the newsletter, is now DDT Newsletter Online. Downe Township is very special place to me. I have lived here for almost 40 years. My daughter is in the fourth grade in the Downe Township School District. I have every reason to continue to working toward making Downe an even better place to live. I believe a single voice can make a difference. I also believe that the Internet has given my single voice a strength and range of exposure that, before the Web, one voice has never had. "There is no week, nor day, nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves - and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance." Walt Whitman The DDT Newsletter Online continues that spirit of confidence and defiance. Comments to the DDT are welcome but must not be anonymous.
