I'm having difficulty getting letters to the editor printed in the Bridgeton News.

The newspaper editor is Matt Gray. Mr. Gray is under the mistaken impression the I am the only in great disagreement with Patterson's method and his philosophy.

Here are the latest emails that Mr. Gray and I have sent. I'll be moving this information after the situation is resolved...meaning, if the BEN prints a letter from me.

Here is the dialog so far...

Subject: Letter to the editor...Second attempt.

To the Editor:

This letter is being written on Friday, the eve of the Memorial weekend for 2003. Many cities and municipalities are having parades and other activities to thank and to remember our veterans and troops in uniform.

Although I did not serve in country, Viet Nam was killing lots of people when I served with the 82d Airborne Division. When I watched the recent coverage of the 187th Airborne Battle Group jumping into Northern Iraq I felt a great identification to those brave guys. The 187th ABG was located two blocks away from my barracks at Ft. Bragg. I wondered if those brave troopers would be prevented from speaking at their townıs Memorial Day or Veteranıs Day activities the way I was prevented from speaking in Downe Township.

Prior to the first Veteranıs Day celebration in Downe Township, Davis Patterson handed me a printer flyer which contained the words patriotic oratory and I ask Mr. Patterson if he was going to allow me to speak. His answer was: "If thereıs time."

As it turned out, there was time for prayers, hymn singing, bagpipes, sermons and speeches but there was no time for comment from me. Although I wrote two letters concerning the situation to the Bridgeton News neither letter was ever printed.

The News owes it to its readers to explain why Davis Patterson has had two letters printed in ten days but the paper refuses to print letters from me.

In very recent letters to the paper, Mr. Patterson has attacked our school board president by name; our entire school board; and, particularly, the teachers in our school system. Why Mr. Patterson would spout such venom toward our teachers and the NJEA?

Davis Patterson is a dangerous zealot. In his May 20th epistle to the News he wrote: "I look forward to a Public School Emancipation Day when taxpayers will finally rise up in a second American Revolution."

He looks forward to a revolution! Iım sure the folks in Homeland Security will love to know that.

Downe Township, with total population of 1631, has four candidates for the position currently filled by Mr. Patterson. The large number of candidates is a clear indication of how dissatisfied folks are with Daveıs recent actions. Fortunately, more and more people are realizing that Downe Township doesnıt need Davis Patterson.

Downe Township needs a committeeman who values honesty and integrity ...and one who doesnıt want another revolution.

Downe Township needs Chester Riland as itıs next committeeman.

Vote for Chet Riland on June 3rd.

Bernie - Good morning. The deadline for letters critical of candidates was last Tuesday, so I can't use this letter. That's the deadline we published in the paper. I usually tell people they can get one letter every two weeks, though that policy isn't etched in stone. I don't get that many letters, so it's really never been a problem. If someone sends me a letter I can publish, I usually think about getting the person's viewpoint out there rather than worrying about days and weeks since their last submission. About your letter concerning speaking at the Downe services - here's the problem - The exchange you described in your letter was a one-on-one dispute  you had with Patterson. This wasn't something that happened in a public forum. There is no record I can refer to in this matter, just your word against his. It's one thing to offer comment on a politician's record, to criticize that record or to call for that person to be replaced. When we get into personal disputes, it's a more difficult matter.
If you want to dicuss this further, give me a call tomorrow - 451-1000, ext 459.

Matt...

Thank you for your rapid reply.

I suppose I should have been more sure of what I was asking when I asked you for closing dates on letters. I didn't realize there were different dates depending upon the letter content or focal point of a letter.

People who don't understand the full details of the situation in Downe claim my statements regarding Davis are personal. They are not. The fact is that five people are in the running for one seat among a population of 1631 people. One doesn't need to be Margaret Mead to see something is amiss in the microcosm of Downe Township. Many people with whom I speak are disgusted with Patterson and his methods. I'm simply the most publically vocal. A commissioner of the Downe Seniors told me on Friday that their membership has issues also.

The issues in question are not just between Davis and myself. All of his actions took place in the company of others and his actions effect us all. He is an elected official, not a common citizen. We are disgusted. The word has travelled to enough people that five people are lined up against him. It ain't just me, Matt, believe me.

Your response deftly ignores the main issues in my email. Your paper and you personally have chosen, for what ever reason, to print letters advocating revolution but you won't print letters critical of that. He wrote that in a letter to you and you printed it. How is my indignation with his words personal when you printed his words. Aren't you stretching to censor me? You received...or Jack received...calls from him with threats if your paper printed my letter. You write: "There is no record I can refer to in this matter, just your word against his." He called and spoke with your staff. What more record could you want?

Your reporter, Jean Jones, chose to not print my question to Mr. Patterson and she also chose to ignore that I will be a candidate for committeeman as a registered Libertarian. Ms. Jones has known of my difficulties dealing with the County Clerks office. It puzzles me as to why she wouldn't print my question and mention my candidacy.

You or your superiors or your attorneys chose to not print my last two letters. Should I consider it personal between you and I that your paper won't print my letters or report on my candidacy? You or Ms. Jones mentioned doing a piece on the dynamics of BS in Downe. We are still waiting.

The relationship between newspapers and the private citizen has changed. For ever and in our favor. I was once told by a reporter for The Press: "...don't piss off people who buy ink by the barrel." I suggest: "Don't piss off a man with a computer and a website."

School Issues

Whew...so many things are going on with the Downe Township Schools system it's difficult to know where to start.

You can read the Downe Township Schools topical web log HERE.

Environmental Issues

The beauty of Downe Township is slowly slipping away as our world is changing before our eyes.

A majestic and beautiful tree is dying. Whether you hug trees or cut them down for firewood this is sad...

See it by clicking here: Death of a Pond Pine.

Would you believe a few thousand MORE acres of Downe Township will be soon tax exempt?

Read the latest on our tax exempt situation. By some reports, our tax exempt land is now over 85% of the land in Downe Township.

See the Environmental Issues web log HERE.

Senior Issues

Downe Township has a rather large senior population because folks realize what a wonderful place we have for retirement.

On recent visits to the Senior Center when I made presentations to the group more the 15 seniors were present.

Read more about Downe Seniors on Downe Senior web log which is HERE.

The DDT Newsletter Online was originally published in a print addition of one or two pages and distributed by mail with a bulk mailing permit.

The original DDT Newsletter was one man's attempt to change Downe Township's political atmosphere by informing the residents in a humorous way that our township could be administered better to everyone's benefit.  This new Internet based version of the newsletter, is now DDT Newsletter Online.

Downe Township is very special place to me. I have lived here for almost 40 years. My daughter is in the fourth grade in the Downe Township School District. I have every reason to continue to working toward making Downe an even better place to live.

I believe a single voice can make a difference.

I also believe that the Internet has given my single voice a strength and range of exposure that, before the Web,  one voice has never had.

"There is no week, nor day, nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves - and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance."

Walt Whitman

The DDT Newsletter Online continues that spirit of confidence and defiance.
